SUPER VISA FOR PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS

A Super Visa is a multi-entry visitor visa that allows eligible parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit them in Canada. It is not just a visit for how many days, but it is for longer periods of time. This visa lets the parents and grandparents visit their children or grandchildren for up to two years at a time and provides multiple entries with a maximum validity of ten years, or one month prior to the passport’s expiry date.

The Government of Canada is clearly making an effort to help reunite Canadians with their parents and grandparents more effectively.

By obtaining the super visa, applicants will be able to travel freely between Canada and their home country without needing to apply for an extension or the hassle of regularly re-applying for a regular visitor’s visa or a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).

Are you eligible for a Super Visa?

The requirements for Super Visa is mostly similar to the Temporary Resident Visa. However, additional documentation is required to ensure that the applicant parents or grandparents will be well supported during their stay in Canada. To be eligible for a super visa, an applicant must:

  • be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
  • have proof of parental relationship with child or grandchild, such as a birth certificate that names him or her as a parent
  • have a signed letter of invitation from the child or grandchild residing in Canada
  • have documents to prove that child or grandchild meets the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) minimum
  • have medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company that is:
    • valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry
    • at least $100,000 coverage
    • have proof that the medical insurance has been paid

Note that applicants must apply from outside Canada and be allowed to enter Canada. They also need to take an immigration medical exam and meet certain other conditions.

Note that the Super Visa is still a temporary application. To stay in Canada permanently, parents and grandparents must be sponsored for permanent residence. Contact us to learn more.
